Yes, while we need to fight against the military's continuous interference in politics, we must also reject the opportunist politics of the likes of Benazir. One of the reasons that the movement is still confined to a relatively small segment of society is because of the rest of Pakistan's complete disillusionment with Benazir. I agree with you on the fact that Musharraf and the military are the greater evil here and PPP is one of the very few parties with any real grass-root support, but I think it's also time to show people that our political options need not be confined to Musharraf or Benazir. Let's not forget that Benazir, just a week ago was ready to strike a deal with the same General she now so vociferously condemns. This deal that would have pretty much stamped out any chance of democracy that we had. In Jemima's words, she is no Aung San suu kyi. I urge you to not play into her hands and instead, stand behind leaders who we know for a fact are sincere.maryamjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18142918203406178201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801866465903086287.post-48908318254645335592007-11-20T02:08:00.000+05:002007-11-20T02:08:00.000+05:00the practicla question however remains: who do we ...the practicla question however remains: who do we get the military out of politics? and whather or not such a thing is advisable in tersm of short term stabiility... for this we must understand the incentive strucure of differnt interets groups such as military, poitcisn liek BB and the lawyers and accordingly coem up witha soulution which is pragmatic .... for example.. we may think that by simply having free elections... we have "restored: demoracry to ane xtent.. but if we take into account how the military would recat in medium term to such a threat then things may be differnt...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801866465903086287.post-76113041064834753942007-11-20T02:04:00.000+05:002007-11-20T02:04:00.000+05:00We defintely need to stress more and more on insit...We defintely need to stress more and more on insitutional development, rather than individuals. BB , like any other, is going to act in her self interest.. it is our job as citizens of Pak. to put our demands to our leaders and to pressure them through our potential future votes. For this, we as paksiatnis have to agree on fubdamental things like indepednet judiciary, to put one united demand which our leadres are forced to follow even if they dont like it....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801866465903086287.post-16672900639801796972007-11-20T00:12:00.000+05:002007-11-20T00:12:00.000+05:00I will beg to differ with Mr. Ali here. PPP with its corrupt leadership is highly unlikely to pursue the cause of an independent and honest judiciary. They will again provide some other COAS with excuse to usurp the power. We have a very courageous, learned and clean politician in Imran Khan. Why not throw our weight behind him, instead of paving way for replacement of a dictator with a corrupt leadership?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
