LUMS Students strongly condemn Benazir's assassination

The students of the Lahore University of Management Sciences strongly condemned the assassination of former Prime Minister benazir Bhutto in an on-campus sit in today (Thursday), as soon as news was recieved about her tragic demise . Fateha was offered by about 150 students and some faculty members who gathered outside the dining centre upon hearing the news. The students deplored the senseless murder and demanded that the culprits be brought to justice and stressed upon the need for calm and stability in the country.

We consider this a tragic moment in the nation's history. The attack
today has not been upon a person but upon the stability and solidarity of a nation and upon the foundations of representative government in this country. We express our condolences to the family of Benazir Bhutto and the families of all those who have been killed. Regardless of our varying political views, in this moment of grief, all of us
stand one with you. We strongly condemn the unlawful killing of
Pakistani citizens, particulary those who enjoyed the trust and
confidence of millions accross the country.

At a time like this, we, the people of this country, must not let our foes divide us. Also, we urge every one to exercise restraint: turning upon each other's lives and property is highly comdemninble and makes no sense. Fires have been lit in cities throughout Pakistan. This is not a time to ignite new fires but a time to fight the fires that have been lit. We must unite in solidarity - in solemn respect today for a leader of millions - we must unite, though, in order to sustain this nation.

Check out Robert Fisk's recent column in The Independent, UK.

I mostly liked the part about the coverage of the local and international media. But as for who did this, many questions remain unanswered. Perhaps we do not have enough evidence as yet, probably we never will!

This is a sad tragedy, nonetheless. My condolences to the families of all the victims in the current wave of violence and to all concerned around the world.
